Callings: A detective.
A detective. An employee of Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph. The first director of the Human Relations Department for the City of Kansas City. Alvin Brooks has seen it all, and has relished his public service through it all. In 1999, he successfully ran for City Council and rose to serve as Mayor Pro Tem until 2007. Brooks is most visible as president of the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, an advocacy group that addresses the root causes of violence and seeks justice for all people affected.

Icon Helps to Reflect on the Call to Priesthood
An icon commissioned by one priest in Connecticut has been selected to be the national image for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' celebration of the Year for Priests. Announced in June 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI for Catholics worldwide, the Year for Priest is a time of prayer for and reflection by priests on their sacred calling. Town is Birthplace for Worldwide Devotion
This week's installment of Sacred Sites in 60 Seconds brings us to Paray-le-Monial, France. Here in 1673 and for the following year and half, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque received visions of Christ. In response to them, she worked diligently to foster devotion to the Sacred Heart. St. Margaret's feast day is October 16 while the solemnity of the Sacred Heart is in June.

Mont-Saint-Michel: Spectacular Inspiration
Another installment in his Sacred Sites in 60 Seconds series, host Lino Rulli brings us to Mont-Saint-Michel in northern France. It has been a pilgrimage center since A.D. 708. Seemingly floating on the sea, the monastery enables today's pilgrims and tourists to get away from it all. The Feast of St. Michael the Archangel is September 29.

 

Teaching the Faith is #1 priority
Another school year begins. And while reading, writing, and arithmetic are stressed at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Atlanta, principal Karen Vogtner makes sure that the Catholic faith permeates all that is said and done in the classrooms and corridors.
