  • When Trumpets Fade -- World War II tale of an embittered private (Ron Eldard) who becomes a hero in spite of himself when his infantry unit is mauled by the(G) erman Wehrmacht during the 1944-45 Battle of the Hurtgen Forest along the Belgian-German border. Directed by John Irvin, the television production re-creates the inhuman carnage of the battlefield with special-effects realism but its anti-war story never gets beyond the usual movie stereotypes of men in war, especially the heroic anti-hero at its center. Gory battlefield violence, coarse humor, numerous sexual expletives and occasional profanity.(A-III) (R) ( 1998 )
