  • Topaze -- Droll comedy from Marcel Pagnol's play in which a poor but honest Paris schoolteacher (John Barrymore) becomes a wealthy man after turning the tables on the baron (Reginald Mason) who duped him into promoting a shoddy product. Directed by Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast, the story's humor stems from Barrymore's tongue-in-cheek portrayal of the meek academic who learns to enjoy the rewards of dishonesty. An unfaithful husband and sexual innuendo. (A-III) (br) ( 1933 )
