  • Tom Jones -- Zestful adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic novel about the misadventures, largely amorous, of a young man (Albert Finney) among the high-born and low of 18th-century England. Director Tony Richardson treats the melodramatic proceedings with a droll combination of mock heroics, antic slapstick, bawdy asides and much social satire. Though the humor is often coarse and the blood-lust of a deer hunt is brutally graphic, it succeeds largely as a period comedy of manners and morals. (A-IV) (br) ( 1963 )
