  • Tom Brown's School Days -- Sturdy version of the Thomas Hughes novel about the troubles of a new boy (Jimmy Lydon) in 19th-century England's Rugby where he's tormented by the house bully (Billy Halop), then ostracized mistakenly as a tattle-tale by classmates, but makes it through thanks to the school's reformist headmaster (Cedric Hardwicke). Director Robert Stevenson provides a robust period picture of life in a boys' boarding school and the struggle to end the tyranny of the older students. (A-I) (br) ( 1940 )
