  • Stars and Stripes Forever -- Episodic story of John Philip Sousa (Clifton Webb) from his years conducting the U.S. Marine Corps band to his success as a music composer whose rousing marches make the Sousa Band an international favorite. Directed by Henry Koster, the late 19th-century era is as interesting as the characters, with Webb's stiff yet likeable performance ably abetted by Ruth Hussey as his bemused wife, but it's Sousa's irresistably upbeat music which paces the action and makes the result grandly entertaining.
