  • Razor's Edge, The -- Glossy adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's story of an American (Tyrone Power) who returns from World War I convinced there is more to life than attaining wealth, quits his society friends for Paris to rethink his goals, then winds up in India seeking spiritual wisdom. Directed by Edmund Goulding, the man's growing idealism leads him to give up the love of a socialite (Gene Tierney) and devote himself instead to helping a deeply troubled woman (Anne Baxter), but the result of all this selflessness adds up to little more than a slickly contrived tearjerker. Romantic complications and vague spiritual yearnings. (A-II) (br) ( 1946 )
