  • Music of Chance, The -- Seedy gambler James Spader and ex-firefighter Mandy Patinking lose all in a high-stakes card game to eccentric millionaires Charles Durning and Joel Grey, then set to working off their debt by building a massive stone wall on the winners' secluded estate under the watchful eyes of smilingly sinister groundskeeper M. Emmet Walsh. Directed by Philip Haas, the psychological tale of cunning characters trying to outfox each other is interesting to watch but leads nowhere and in the end seems pointless. An implied sexual encounter, several off-screen beatings and intermittent rough language. (A-III) (R) ( 1993 )

    These movies have been evaluated for artistic merit and moral suitability by the media reviewing division of Catholic News Service. The reviews include the CNS rating, the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and a brief synopsis of the movie.

    The classifications are as follows:

    A-I -- general patronage;
    A-II -- adults and adolescents;
    A-III -- adults;
    L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. L replaces the previous classification, A-IV.
