  • Music Lovers, The -- British production about the tormented life of 19th-century Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Richard Chamberlain) places too much stress on trying to link his music to his sexual disorientation and unconsummated marriage to a woman (Glenda Jackson) who, in a grisly set of sequences, goes quite mad. Directed by Ken Russell with characteristic visual extravagance and narrative weaknesses, the movie's Freudian approach is questionable but its interplay with realism and surrealism, objectivity and subjectivity, succeeds to a surprising degree. Mature themes and some nudity. (A-IV) (R) ( 1971 )
