  • Murphy's War -- Offbeat drama about merchant seaman Peter O'Toole, sole survivor of a German submarine attack off South America near the end of World War II, who is picked up by barge owner Philippe Noiret and patched up by Quaker missionary Sian Phillips. O'Toole seeks to sink the U-boat by bombs from an ancient airplane, ramming it with the old barge and is still at it when the war ends. Director Peter Yates fails to make his implausible revenge tale exciting, let alone interesting. Some intense scenes of wartime violence. (A-III) (GP) ( 1971 )
