  • Murders in the Rue Morgue -- Creaky horror tale set in 19th-century Paris where a medical student (Leon Ames) saves his girlfriend from a mad scientist (Bela Lugosi) who's seeking a bride for his giant ape. Directed by Robert Florey, this version of the Edgar Allan Poe story involves some crack-pot notions of evolution, but the narrative builds considerable tension from its eerie atmosphere and stark expressionistic visuals. Some nasty violence, menacing situations and sexual innuendo. (A-III) (br) ( 1932 )
