  • Murder on the Blackboard -- Mystery series with sardonic scholmarm Hildegarde Withers (Edna May Oliver) teaming with NYPD inspector Oscar Piper (James Gleason), this time on the case of a murdered music teacher (Barbara Fritchie). Director George Archainbaud turns the school into an ominous setting whose suspects include fellow teachers Bruce Cabot and Gertrude Michael, principal Tully Marshall and janitor Fredrik Vogeding, but the fun comes from the banter between the amateur sleuth and the hardboiled cop. Mystery menace and sexual innuendo. (A-II) (br) ( 1934 )
