  • Murder by Decree -- Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the Ripper in this handsome, expensively mounted period piece in which Holmes (Christopher Plummer) and Dr. Watson (James Mason) trace a series of murders to a high personnage in Queen Victoria's England. Directed by Bob Clark, a preposterous and incredibly untidy plot is overcome by the fine acting of the principals supported by such nonpareils as John Gielgud and Anthony Quayle. Harmless but somewhat violent and gory entertainment not meant for younger viewers. A- III (PG) ( 1979 )

    These movies have been evaluated for artistic merit and moral suitability by the media reviewing division of Catholic News Service. The reviews include the CNS rating, the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and a brief synopsis of the movie.

    The classifications are as follows:

    A-I -- general patronage;
    A-II -- adults and adolescents;
    A-III -- adults;
    L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. L replaces the previous classification, A-IV.
