  • Mummy, The -- Eerie fantasy classic in which the 3700-year-old mummy of an Egyptian high priest (Boris Karloff) comes to life in a London museum, then tries to make off with a Englishwoman (Zita Johann) resembling the princess he had once loved. Imaginatively directed by Karl Freund, the creepy premise proves effective even though only Karloff's piercing eyes are seen through the mummy's burial wrappings, with a lengthy flashback to the thwarted love story in ancient Karnak supplying the mummy's motivation for his desperate activities in the present. Stylized violence, menace and romantic complications. (A-II) (br) ( 1932 )
