  • Little Colonel, The -- Rejecting his daughter (Evelyn Venable) for marrying a Yankee (John Lodge) after the Civil War, an irascible Kentucky colonel (Lionel Barrymore) is finally won over by their spunky little girl (Shirley Temple). Director David Butler's old-fashioned melodrama of family reconciliation centers in the interplay between youngster and grandfather as well as the child's friendship with black servants, notably in scenes with Hattie McDaniel at a river baptism and some stylish tap dancing with Bill Robinson upstairs and down. Still a lot of fun, though flawed by regional and racial stereotypes. (A-I) (PG) ( 1935 )
