  • Limbo -- Escaping a boat where a murder has taken place, a fisherman (David Strathairn), his new girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and her estranged teen daughter (Vanessa Martinez) find themselves stranded on an Alaskan island unsure if the killers will find them, the elements will kill them or a search plane will rescue them. Writer-director John Sayles meticulously explores the roiling emotions of troubled characters as they struggle to survive or at least make peace with one another in a drama some may find flawed by its ending. An off-screen sexual encounter, fleeting off-screen violence, recurring rough language and occasional profanity. (A-III) (R) ( 1999 )

    These movies have been evaluated for artistic merit and moral suitability by the media reviewing division of Catholic News Service. The reviews include the CNS rating, the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and a brief synopsis of the movie.

    The classifications are as follows:

    A-I -- general patronage;
    A-II -- adults and adolescents;
    A-III -- adults;
    L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. L replaces the previous classification, A-IV.
    O -- morally offensive.

    Note: Some movies previously were designated A-IV. Older films with this classification should be regarded as classified L.
