  • Life of Emile Zola, The -- Uplifting dramatization follows the French author and crusading journalist (Paul Muni) from obscurity in 1862 Paris to his first popular novel, "Nana," then growing prosperity from a prolific writing career until his final triumph in achieving the vindication of Captain Alfred Dreyfus (Joseph Schildkraut) after his unjust 1894 conviction for treason. Directed by William Dieterle, the production's convincing re-creation of the historical setting adds credibility to Muni's sympathetic performance as an idealist upholding the cause of the powerless against the injustices of those in power. Discreet reference to prostitution. (A-I) (br) ( 1937 )
