  • Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The -- Patriotic saga in which the title British officer (Roger Livesey) is a hero in the Boer War, a general in World War I, then comes out of retirement to serve as a Home Guard commander in World War II. Written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the picture is overlong and brimming with sentimentality, yet holds interest with its sympathetic portrayal of Blimp's personal life, the three women who influence it (each played by Deborah Kerr) and a German officer (Anton Walbrook) whom he befriended after a duel in 1902 Berlin and who returns as a refugee from Hitler to warn that chivalry has been out-dated by the Nazis. Wartime violence and romantic complications. (A-II) (br) ( 1943 )
