If I Had a Gun -- The setting is a small rural village in Slovakia, the state created after the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, during the last years of World War II. The central figure is a young boy living through the normal problems of early adolescence, which are compounded by the extraordinary conditions of wartime. Director Stephen Uher does not sentimentalize his subject but suggests that the effect of violence upon the young is the most terrible heritage that the adult world has to bestow.
