Fort Apache -- Elegiac Western in which a glory-seeking colonel (Henry Fonda) arrives from the East to command a cavalry post, arrogantly refuses the counsel of a seasoned subordinate (John Wayne) and leads his troop into a massacre by superior Indian forces. In contrasting the colonel's ignorance and scorn of the foe with the captain's experience and respect for the Indian, director John Ford acknowledges the reality of how the West was won while recognizing the need to turn it into a myth.
