  • Forever Amber -- Romantic potboiler set in 17th-century England where an enterprising country lass (Linda Darnell) follows a dashing cavalier (Cornel Wilde) to London, then is left with his baby and a fierce determination to become his wife by gaining title and fortune through loveless bedroom intrigues in the corrupt court of Charles II (George Sanders). Directed by Otto Preminger, the pulp romance lumbers fitfully along to its unhappy conclusion, succeeding better with the period costumes and settings than the story's superficial characters and shallow emotions. Sexual situations. (A-III) (br) ( 1947 )
