  • Foreign Correspondent -- With war threatening in Europe, a bumptious American newspaper reporter (Joel McCrea) stumbles upon a Nazi spy ring in Holland, escapes to London where he falls for the daughter (Laraine Day) of a peace leader (Herbert Marshall) and, after various attempts on his life, finally manages to get his story of a Nazi plot to the American public. Director Alfred Hitchcock turns in a masterful suspense thriller with some chuckles and a lot of clever business along the way, from an official's assassination amidst a rainswept maelstrom of umbrellas to a plane crash at sea, but the characters are cardboard and the script's antifascist rhetoric is dated. Much menace. (A-II) (nr) ( 1940 )
