  • Daughters of the Dust -- Lyrical, feminist period piece set on an island off the South Carolina coast where a family clan descended from West African slaves gather on a summer's day in 1902 to discuss their plans for moving to the mainland. Writer-director Julie Dash's highly imaginative and very stylized work contrasts those who want to pursue the American dream with the majority who are adamant about preserving the African traditions and mystical tales that have sustained them through countless generations. Some familial bickering and mild sexual references. (A-II) (nr) ( 1991 )
